Description
The Kankakee County Supervisor of Assessments Office remains committed to ensuring that all Kankakee County residents whose property was damaged during the March 10, 2026 storm receive a timely review by an assessment official. This review helps ensure that any appropriate assessment reductions are applied correctly. If you experienced storm damage, or if your home is currently uninhabitable, it is important to contact your local Township Assessor or the Supervisor of Assessments Office so your property can be reviewed. In addition, the Natural Disaster Homestead Exemption, provided under 35 ILCS 200/15‑173 of the Illinois Property Tax Code, may be available to qualifying homeowners. This exemption can only be applied for after the residential structure has been rebuilt.
Requirements
  • Property must be in Kankakee County and have storm-related damage (or be uninhabitable) to request an assessment review
  • Natural Disaster Homestead Exemption is for homeowners and "can only be applied for after the residential structure has been rebuilt."
  • The residential structure must be rebuilt within two years of the natural disaster.
  • The square footage of the rebuilt structure may not exceed 110% of the original square footage.
  • The initial application must be filed no later than the first taxable year after the structure is rebuilt.
  • The exemption must be applied annually.

Contact the Kankakee County Supervisor of Assessments Office to request a review of storm-damaged property and ask about eligibility for the Natural Disaster Homestead Exemption. Information shared will be forwarded to the appropriate Township Assessor since most valuation work is completed at the township level.
